The LEGO Batman Movie: Behind-the-Bricks

by Lambert Varias

Warner Bros. Pictures recently posted a new promotional video for the upcoming The LEGO Batman Movie. The video masquerades as an interview with the movie’s stars. Not Will Arnett, Michael Cera, Rosario Dawson et al, but their minifig alter egos. As you can expect, it’s mostly jokes – and the Joker – told through top notch stop-motion animation.

Watching it made me wonder if this is even aimed at kids. Batman’s back and forth with Robin involves a lot of dark humor that stems from Dick Grayson’s need for parenting. And Batman is this narcissistic character who finds it really hard to admit that he has the capacity to care for others on a personal level. And I don’t even know what the Joker is referring to when he’s saying that he’s actually a nice guy. I’m hopeful that there really is more behind the bricks here.
