Snowflame: DC’s Cocaine-fueled Villain

by Lambert Varias

Today I Found Out features one of the comic book world’s infamous oddballs. Snowflame is a villain who appeared in the second issue of the short-lived 1988 series New Guardians. While the titular team of heroes are failed attempts at subverting stereotypes, Snowflame takes the cake. He’s a Colombian drug lord – surprise! – who worships coke and gains powers such as pyrokinesis from ingesting the drug.

Despite appearing for only one issue, Snowflame became more popular than the New Guardians themselves. Julie Sydor ran a webcomic about “Mr. S” from 2011 to 2013, and the web series Atop the Fourth Wall featured an even more drug-addled version of the character as comic relief.

Check out the video for a look back on the cringe-inducing New Guardians, Snowflame, as well as a couple of other weird characters from the comic book world. I remember that Marvel has an evil mutant who turns people into data, and he used his ability to quickly transport troops into the battlefield. But for the life of me I can’t remember his name.
