Recreating the Millennium Falcon’s Holochess Set

by Lambert Varias

One of the many Easter eggs in Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the holochess set aboard the Millennium Falcon. Tippett Studio made the animated sequence that appeared in Star Wars: A New Hope, and they were asked to do it again for Episode VII. Adam Savage and Tested visited Phil Tippett and his team while they were shooting the new scene.

I’ll never get tired of behind-the-scenes videos about animation, especially stop-motion animation. It’s incredibly tedious (all this effort for an Easter egg!) but when done well it has a unique charm and vividness. The video below is Tippett Studio’s own featurette about their work on the holochess.
