HBO’s Westworld Gets Teased

by Paul Strauss

I have really vivid, nightmarish memories of the classic science fiction film Westworld from when I was a youngster. I probably shouldn’t have been watching a movie that included killer humanoids with removable faces, and robotic sex, but then again, I was advanced for my age.

For those of you unfamiliar with the plotline, Westworld follows the tale of a high-tech amusement park that simulates various periods of time, including Roman, Medieval and the Old West, allowing visitors to enjoy a variety of consequence-free adventures. Things go horribly wrong when systems start malfunctioning, leaving the androids who occupy the park to their own devices, and without safeguards. You can imagine how that works out.

Now, HBO is readying a new series loosely based on the original 1973 film by the late, great Michael Crichton, and if the creator and cast are any indication, it’s shaping up to be great. The show is being helmed by Jonathan Nolan, who worked alongside brother Christopher to pen such great screenplays and stories as The Dark Knight, Interstellar, and Memento, among other films. In addition, the show is packed with star players, including Anthony Hopkins, Evan Rachel Wood, Jeffrey Wright (one of my personal favorite actors), Thandie Newton, James Marsden, Ed Harris and more.

From the looks of the just-released teaser, the androids in the series won’t know that they’re androids, and discover their true realities along the way, a la Sean Young in Blade Runner, adding a new dimension to the plot.

Expect Westworld to hit screens sometime in 2016. I, for one, can’t wait to fill my head once more with robotic nightmares.
