Star Wars: Battlefront Fighter Squadron Gameplay
August 6th, 2015We’ve seen Star Wars: Battlefront‘s promises of 40-player ground battles. At Gamescom 2015 EA unveiled the multiplayer shooter’s aerial mode, Fighter Squadron.
In Fighter Squadron, the team that racks up 200 kills or has the most kills when the time expires wins the round. You can pilot the Rebels’ X-wing and A-wing as well as the Empire’s TIE Fighter and TIE Interceptor. The ships have variants of two weapons: laser cannons and missiles. Rebels can also activate a temporary shield, while the Imperial ships have a speed boost. In addition, there are powerups hidden throughout the maps, but may require crafty flying in order to find and reach.
The best powerup is theoretically the one that lets you become the ace fighter of either side for a few minutes. With that power up, a Rebel player will get to pilot the Millenium Falcon. Check out the last part of the trailer to see the Empire’s top gun. Nope, it’s not the Death Star. Naturally, these ace fighters have better capabilities than the stock ships.
While Fighter Squadron can have “only” up to 20 players, skirmishes will also be filled with AI ships. This should not only lend a more tense atmosphere but will also serve to keep the mode fun for newbies, because the AI will be easier to take down than experienced players. Vets on the other hand can set their sights on either teams’ transport shuttles, which give your team bonus points when taken down. I hope EA comes up with a free or cheap spectator pass, because I’m not into shooters but I think I’d have fun watching players go at it in this game.
