The Martian (Trailer)

by Paul Strauss

Ridley Scott’s latest film takes us on a mission to Mars. However, the crew of the Aries III is forced to leave the surface of the red planet, and astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is left behind. Mark must use his faculties to survive with no means of communication, depleted food reserves, and no way home.

In the first trailer for The Martian, we also learn that Watney manages to “science the shit out” of things and break through with a message home, though NASA’s bureaucrats are hesitant to send a rescue crew, resulting in what amounts to a mutiny by his team to save the lone astronaut.

To me, the movie reads as a combination of Castaway and Gravity, two of my favorite films. With Ridley behind the lens, a screenplay by Daredevil’s Drew Goddard, and a cast that includes Kate Mara, Jessica Chastain, Sean Bean, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Donald Glover, Michael Peña and Chiwetel Ejiofor, it’s got a whole lot of potential.

The Martian opens U.S. screens on November 25, 2015.
