Patton Oswalt Rises from Fury Road Cutting Room Floor

by Paul Strauss

When I heard that they were doing a new Mad Max movie I was not all the jazzed – the original was a masterpiece and a modern remake would probably pale in comparison. I was way wrong – Fury Road has gotten great reviews (the New Yorker ranked it a 100 according to MetaCritic) and it is doing bang-up box office business.

One of the most interesting characters in the film is the masked, red-suited Coma the Doof Warrior, who stands on top of a giant truck covered in rock concert-quality audio speakers and churns out awesome riffs with a flame-throwing guitar to rev up the troops.

What I didn’t know until Conan aired the other night was that Coma was originally not the only character in the film designed to keep the warriors motivated. Comedian of the moment Patton Oswalt was cast as a stand-up comedian who was also supposed to ride atop a giant truck and yuck it up as comic relief for the fighting men. Unfortunately, his part was chopped out at the last minute, but when he appeared on Conan he brought along a clip to show fans what could have been. In my opinion, the kid should have stayed in the picture. Watch and decide for yourself.
