MegaBot Prototype Mech Armed with Paintball Cannon

by Lambert Varias

You may have heard about MegaBots in the past year. It’s a company with an audacious plan to construct functioning 15ft-tall two-person mechs and create a combat sport featuring the giant robots. The scientists and engineers behind MegaBots launched a Kickstarter fundraiser last year but were unable to reach their $1.8M goal. However, it appears the team has soldiered on, as evidenced by their demo at the 2015 Maker Faire Bay Area.

Their demo showed a prototype MegaBot firing its huge paintball cannon at a car. This mech had tracks, but as MegaBots co-founder Matt Oehrlein mentions in MAKE:’s video their goal has always been to make bipedal mechs. They also mentioned in their Kickstarter video, which you can see below, that the mechs might eventually be armed with more destructive weapons. Instead of monopolizing their mech technology, MegaBots’ goal is to sell kits and parts so that others – aka Japan – can create their own mechs.20
