Mark Hamill’s Original Star Wars Screen Test

by Paul Strauss

With the original cast of Star Wars returning to the screen for The Force Awakens, the interest in the franchise is greater than it has been in years. Here’s a look at some really early footage from pre-production of the classic Episode IV.

It’s a fairly lengthy discussion between Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford as they have an initial discussion about bringing their robot payload to the Rebels. What’s interesting is how different some of the plot points are in this early version of the script. What would later be known as Alderaan was still known as Organa Prime, and there’s a reference to the Alderaan system being a dangerous place. On the other hand, the differences between Luke’s good intentions and Han’s greed were consistent with what we saw in the finished film. Also, if Hamill looks different to you, that’s because he would later break his nose in a car wreck.
