Free Comic Book Day is Coming

by John Thomas

Free Comic Book Day is almost here! Since 2002, comic book stores have thrown open their doors and given away comic books on the first Saturday in May (that’s May 2 this year). The event was organized for several reasons, including getting young readers hooked on the colorful books (as well as hooked on reading in general), luring lapsed fans back into the fantasy fold, and keeping comic book fans coming back for more.

However, for the uninitiated, this does not mean that you can enter the comic book store of your choice and take the comics of your choice. If it did, riots would erupt as crazed collectors tore through stores looking for a Batman #1 or a Superman #1.

Actually, the way it works is that certain comics are selected and given away for free. This year, there will be 50 you can get your hands on, including an eclectic array ranging from The Phantom and The Tick to Bob’s Burgers and Fight Club. And no, you won’t get all 50, but each person will get at least one comic.

How do you find a participating store near you? Easy – just visit the website, type in your zip code and a list with a handy map instantly appears.
