No matter what you think of the evolution of the lightsaber throughout the Star Wars prequels or the The Force Awakens‘ silly crossguard variant, the original lightsaber is still one of the greatest weapons in the history of science fiction. Combining a close-quarters bladed weapon with the destructive force of plasma energy was sheer genius. Never mind the sound it makes.
