Chappie: Teaser Trailer

by Paul Strauss

Neill Blomkamp is the director and writer behind District 9 and Elysium. Now his next movie is wrapping up production, and it looks like it could be a good one. Chappie tells the story of an intelligent, but childlike humanoid robot who has the ability to learn. Despite being made from bulletproof metal, Chappie is a gentle spirit, who learns paint and write poetry. As he makes contact with the outside world, Chappie must grow from a robot child into a robot man.

Every child comes into the world full of promise, and none more so than Chappie: he is gifted, special, a prodigy. Like any child, Chappie will come under the influence of his surroundings – some good, some bad – and he will rely on his heart and soul to find his way in the world and become his own man. But there’s one thing that makes Chappie different from anyone else: he is a robot. The first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. His life, his story, will change the way the world looks at robots and humans forever.

The film stars Hugh Jackman and Sigourney Weaver, and Blomkamp’s go-to guy Sharlto Copley as Chappie the robot, whose performance was captured with mo-cap gear. Jackman’s character is completely against the idea of artificial intelligence, and wants Chappie destroyed. It’s not been revealed who Weaver is playing as of yet.

Chappie is headed to theaters in March 2015.
