Footage from Free Radical’s Unfinished Star Wars Game

by Conner Flynn

You may not realize this, but before EA gained the exclusive Star Wars license and announced a new Star Wars Battlefront, there was a Battlefront III game that Lucasarts cancelled. In fact, there was more than one version of the game. At one point, Rebellion (the makers of Alien vs. Predator) was working on the game, before Lucasarts killed that version and gave it to Free Radical.

Now two videos from Free Radical’s Xbox 360 version of the game have surfaced. Apparently, the game was nearly finished when Lucasarts cancelled it. Both videos are labeled “Pre-Alpha,” but still I think I see why Lucasarts had problems with it. It just doesn’t all come together and has an overall air of silliness, even for a previous-generation Star Wars Battlefront. I mean, check out the AT-AT scene.

Sure, it dates back to 2008, but it seems really dated than that. Don’t get me wrong, there is a lot to like here as well. It just feels awkward and aimless. Hopefully, the new DICE-made Battlefront game will be much better.
