ENVOY: A Short Film

by Paul Strauss

This short film by director David Weinstein follows the story of a young boy who stumbles onto a mysterious alien, which leads him into a world of trouble as he becomes mixed up in a top-secret government operation. While that plot might sound a bit like the story of E.T.: The ExtraTerrestrial, I can assure you that ENVOY has a completely different sensibility than Spielberg’s 1982 classic. If anything, the film has way more in common with The Iron Giant than E.T. At moments it’s a bit clichéd – especially the bit where the dog runs into the cornfield after the alien, but that’s forgivable, and Adam Coggin’s alien VFX are spot on, giving the creature a tremendous sense of life.

Weinstein and his production team created the 9-minute film as a proof of concept, in hopes that it might lead to a feature-length film. Here’s hoping they’re able to move forward with that.
