Geeky Hobo Nickels

by Paul Strauss
Geeky Hobo Nickelszoom in

The art of hobo nickels is all about taking ordinary coins and transforming them into tiny works of art. These particular coins have seen their images of world leaders and national mascots replaced with geeky pop culture icons.

Artist Shaun Hughes remakes coins with intricately carved images of everyone from Chewbacca to Spider-man. In some cases, he re-carves individual coins, while on other cases, he’ll produce a limited-edition piece by engraving a die, then restamping old coins. If I could pay with any of these currencies, it would have to be the five-cent Stormtrooper.
