Futurama Modeled in 3D is Truly Spectactular

by Paul Strauss

Some of Futurama’s animation style combines CGI backdrops and environments with 2D character animation, but we’ve never seen the world of 31st Century New New York look so impressive as in this CGI scene. Russian artist Alexy Zakharov recreated the world of Futurama as an insanely detailed digital 3D scene.

Alexy modeled the environment and animations in 3DS Max, added art and effects with Photoshop and After Effects, and composited the scene using Nuke. The video starts out with the making of the sequence, followed by the entire composited scene at the end. Every little detail is there, including animated advertising on the billboards, and each and every flying vehicle and the Planet Express ship, of course.

You can check out more of the behind the scenes images over on Alexy’s Behance page. And if you have the attention span of a gnat, you can also just skip right to the 32 second-long composite scene below. But trust us when we say it’s worth three minutes of your time to watch the entire making of video above.

Incredible job, Alexy!
