The Real World of Genome Sequencing
June 23rd, 2014Genome sequencing and the manipulation of the human genome are central to many of our favorite science fiction stories, including Gattaca and Bioshock.
The online series Technium and host Lana McKissack take a look at the state of genome sequencing and just how close we are to using it to improve the lives of humans. Sequencing has already been used to help determine genetic risk factors in people and to develop disease-fighting pharmaceuticals. The cost to sequence one’s own genome is now just a little over $1,000, which is astonishing in itself.
