The Giver: New Extended Trailer Sets up the Story

by Kenny Hoeschen

A new trailer for The Giver has just been released and shows Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges as the Giver as they clash over the best way to guide a young boy (Brenton Thwaites). The Giver is a well-known dystopian novel by Lois Lowry first published in 1993. After more than 15 years in development, the film adaptation of the classic novel is scheduled to hit theaters late this summer and we now have the first trailer.

The story is set in a utopian world in which all pain is eliminated by converting all people to “Sameness,” which also eliminates their emotions. But the society is revealed to be more dystopian as the story unfolds. The story revolves around a boy, Jonas (played by Brenton Thwaites), who is chosen to be the “Receiver of Memory” — the person who stores all the past memories from the time before Sameness. But when he meets the “Giver” who is to teach him the past memories, Jonas faces a dilemma.

The Giver stars Brenton Thwaites along with Jeff Bridges (the Giver), Meryl Streep, Alexander Skarsgård, Katie Holmes, and Taylor Swift. It opens in theaters on August 15, 2014.
