The Real Science of Virtual Worlds

by Kenny Hoeschen

The virtual world Flynn finds inside a computer in the film Tron makes one wonder whether we could experience such a world with today’s technology (and also whether Olivia Wilde would be there).

The online series Technium and host Lana McKissack take a look at the state of today’s technology to create virtual world’s with Dr. Tom Defanti of the Qualcomm Institute, who has been working on virtual reality for many years. The worlds Dr. Defanti creates with arrays of wall-mounted screens and tracking devices seem, to us, to be closer to the holodecks of Star Trek, but what he’s achieving is quite extraordinary.
