The Hobbit: An Incredible Look at the VFX from Weta

by Kenny Hoeschen

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug was an incredible visual experience even if you think the story was stretched longer than necessary (hello, Peter Jackson). From the halls of Erebor, Laketown, Smaug’s treasure room, the magnificent dragon himself, the spiders of Mirkwood, and every other amazing visual bit of eye candy, the film was overwhelming.

Weta Digital, the New Zealand visual effects studio responsible for so many of the wondrous effects takes us behind the scenes on creating the film. It’s incredible to think that so many scenes were done completely in CGI and that fully 25% of the film was in CGI.
