Smaug: Creating a Waterlogged Action Scene

Wired goes behind the scenes with the filming of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug in this clip to look at what went into creating the scene where Bilbo and the dwarves escape from the elves by floating down river in barrels. The crew shot an incredible 98 hours of footage — fromĀ aerial shots, green-screen sets, live-action shoots, and complex CG environments — to create this 7 minute scene.
