Elysium: Trillions of Surfaces VFX Breakdown

by Kenny Hoeschen

Whiskeytree visual effects studio put together these two reels to show off the video effects they created for the Neill BlomkampĀ film.

Although the storyline of the movie wasn’t as compelling as what Blomkamp did with District 9, the visual environments were astounding. We love the orbiting ring cities where the wealthy lived, with trees, lakes, and beautiful houses throughout. And the attention to detail in those scenes was great to see, including the transportation systems and the mirrors apparently designed to reflect sunlight into the artificial landscape. A single shot of the ring city of Elysium required the rendering of 5.5 trillion visible triangles.

Be sure to check out Elysium: The Art of the Film hardcover book showcasing some of the amazing environments created for Elysium.
