Is Our Sun Going to Explode?

by Kenny Hoeschen

Fraser Cain, Publisher of Universe Today, looks at something we see occurring occasionally in science fiction stories: is our Sun going to explode in the future? Will it explode as part of its natural lifecycle by going supernova or can it be triggered to explode by some artificial means? As it turns out, the answer is no. Our Sun doesn’t have the necessary mass to go supernova and there’s no way to cause it to explode otherwise. Sorry Syfy channel, this limits your plot points for future movies somewhat severely. Of course, this doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have Will Smith or Bruce Willis standing by, just in case.
