Travel Into Space Via Balloon as a Space* TouristOctober 25th, 2013
The World View Experience will give aspiring astronauts the chance to travel into space (nearly) via a giant balloon. The high altitude balloon ride will allow passengers to gaze down upon Mother Earth from the stratosphere as they orbit comfortable and drink champagne. The cabin will be about the size of a private jet and will be large enough to allow passengers to stand and move around.
The capsule can carry up to six passengers at a time plus two crew members and will take about 90 minutes to reach altitude. It will remain in the stratosphere for about two hours before the balloon is jettisoned and the craft glides back to Earth on an inflated parasail.
Technically, the craft will not quite reach to space, rising just 18.5 miles from Earth; whereas space begins at 62 miles out. But passengers will see the sky darken and be able to observe the curvature of the Earth.
The total cost is $75,000. I think we’ll save ourselves $74,985 and just see Gravity in IMAX 3D again.
