How Will the Universe End? The Science Explained

by Kenny Hoeschen

Universe Today publisher Fraser Cain recently explained how the Earth will end. If mankind somehow manages to survive that, what will we do when the universe itself ends? Cain doesn’t provide that specific answer, but he does explain how the universe will end some day. It all depends on the critical density of the universe. Will expansion slow and reverse? Will the universe expand forever until all the stars die? Or is the critical density just right, expanding forever but always slowing?

Although the critical density measured by astronomers points to the third scenario, the “dark energy” that’s pushing the universe apart faster than predicted, it seems like we’re headed to the big freeze.

Of course, Douglas Adams summarized the end of the universe quite well: “And so the Universe ended.”
