Author Neal Stephenson: We Are All Geeks Now

by Kenny Hoeschen

Neal Stephenson: Science Fiction as a Literary Genre from Gresham College on FORA.tv

Acclaimed science fiction author, Neal Stephenson, delivered a talk at Gresham College in 2008 entitled The Fork: Science Fiction versus Mundane Culture. Stephenson is the best-selling author of such novels as Snow Crash, The Diamond Age, Cryptonomicon, and The Baroque Cycle. He is best know for writing science fiction (in the postcyberpunk genre) and his interests often lead him into investigations of society, mathematics, cryptology, currency and the history of science.

In this forty-minute talk, Stephenson asserts that it no longer makes sense to speak of mainstream and some number of genres. He also explains that, in “speculative fiction,” the idea of intelligence has changed. And the differences between nerds and geeks are discussed and we are all geeks today.

If you’d like to skip the full 40-minute lecture, we’ve included a short excerpt below.
