Whether you enjoyed Pacific Rim or it left you wanting more of something (storyline, writing, depth, whatever) del Toro’s homage to the Japanese kaiju monster movies of the past worked for us and we enjoyed Pacific Rim as a nod to that classic film genre. Josh Horowitz of MTV News sat down with Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro to discuss the possibility of a sequel and his vision for what that would be.
Del Toro discusses how he viewed Pacific Rim as a bridge to bring the classic Japanese kaiju films to a new generation and to embrace that genre. There were also many ideas that ended up on the cutting room floor that lend themselves to a sequel as well as portions of the film that also hint at a sequel. With regards to new kaiju or Jaeger characters, del Toro states, “We will have Gipsy 2.0 for sure. You’re gonna see a merging of Kaiju and Jaeger. And that is quite special.” The remains of Gipsy Danger in the kaiju world will apparently come into play as well as the drifting with the kaiju brain in the form of a hybrid monster. Apparently, we have not yet cancelled the apocalypse.
