Uranus: Our Most Unfortunately Named Planet

by Kenny Hoeschen

C.G.P. Grey who frequently records interesting videos about a variety of topics related to why things are the way they are: the U.S. Electoral College, How to Become Pope and Daylight Savings Time, as a few examples. In this video, Grey delves into the history of the first planet “discovered” by man, meaning that it required the technology of a telescope before it was found: Uranus.

Unfortunately, while “Uranus” was not the first name assigned to the seventh planet from the Sun, it’s the name that stuck and pronouncing it is always problematic. The name, without fail, makes one think of “your anus.” Grey’s suggested at the end of the day is to pronounce it. Not the unfortunate “you-RAIN-us” and not the often adopted “YUR-in-us” but, instead, try to avoid it altogether.

Grey also asked people around the world to pronounce “Uranus,” which is amusing if not in at a mostly juvenile level. That video is included below for your viewing pleasure. We suggest you follow up with some fart jokes.
