Apply Now: One-Way Ticket to Mars

by Kenny Hoeschen

Mars One, a Dutch company, is looking for volunteer astronauts to fly on a mission to Mars. There is one minor catch: there is no return flight. The one-way tickets are necessary to make the mission possible by greatly reducing costs. Anyone over 18 years of age may apply for a seat on the mission by submitting a video on Mars One’s site, but an application fee (between $5 and $73, depending on your country of residency) is required.

Mars One intends to send multiple supply ships, build a colony on the red planet and grow the colony with an ever-expanding crew. The application fees will go towards funding the $6 billion budget to send the first colony. Once selected, a group of 40 astronauts will undergo seven years of training before any of them can fly.
