Industrial Light & Magic provides this handy timeline of their creation of the Death Star for its film debut in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Beginning in 1975 with the opening of the ILM Van Nuys, California studios through the blowing up of seven Death Star models and the climactic Death Star battle scenes and the trench run. The rest is history, as they say.
