Star Wars Minus Star Wars Sums up a New Hope Using Other MediaDecember 18th, 2015
For better or for worse, Star Wars has taken root into the minds of generations across the globe. That’s partly due to its aggressive merchandising, but also undoubtedly due to George Lucas’ memorable tales and characters. Like many art forms and inventions, Lucas didn’t come up with the galaxy far, far away in a vacuum. He was inspired by other artworks and beliefs, just as his creations now inspire and influence many young artists and ways of thinking.
YouTuber Kyle Kallgren wonderfully demonstrates both facets of the series – both as the fruit of the past and the seed of the future – by making a unique video summary of Star Wars IV: A New Hope. Instead of taking excerpts from the movie itself, Kyle made Star Wars Minus Star Wars: Between the Lines using sights and sounds from other movies, as well as TV shows and video games. Some of them are from the past – The Hidden Fortress, Buck Rogers, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly – while some are from the future – Spaceballs, The Lion King, Firefly.
The resulting video is both a memory and a dream, something that’s unmistakable a summary of Star Wars IV yet also about everything else but that movie.
